<\/p>\nOver the last few years, there have been several iconic travel businesses that closed their doors. This has included both local Ontario-based businesses and iconic names like Thomas Cook, an airline and tour operator in the UK and Crystal Cruises, a luxury US-based cruise line.<\/p>\n
But what did those closures mean for Ontarians?<\/p>\n

Did you know that Ontarians are protected?<\/strong><\/p>\n In Ontario, there is a Travel Industry Compensation Fund, which exists to help consumers who are impacted by the failure of an Ontario travel agency or website, Ontario tour operator or any airline or cruise line around the world.<\/p>\n How do I get protected?<\/strong><\/p>\n The key thing consumers need to know is that to receive the protection of the Compensation Fund, travel must be purchased from a TICO-registered travel agency or website. By purchasing from a TICO-registered travel agency or website, you are automatically covered.<\/p>\n Any travel agency or website operating from Ontario, meaning they have a physical presence here, needs to be registered with TICO. To double check if a company is registered, visit our online directory<\/a>.<\/p>\n The coverage does not apply if travel is purchased directly from an airline or cruise line, or a travel agency or booking website located outside of Ontario.<\/p>\n What does the Compensation Fund cover?<\/strong><\/p>\n The Compensation Fund covers up to $5,000 per passenger for travel services that were not received because of the failure of an Ontario travel agency or website, Ontario tour operator or any airline or cruise line. There are certain caps on how much can be paid out for the entire failure.<\/p>\n What if passengers are stranded in destination?<\/strong><\/p>\n If the failure is due to an Ontario travel agency, website or tour operator, and passengers are stranded in destination, TICO will work to bring those passengers home.<\/p>\n What about Ontarians impacted by the closure of an airline or cruise line?<\/strong><\/p>\n The Compensation Fund provides coverage to those consumers who purchased airfare or a cruise\u00a0 through a TICO-registered travel agency or website and didn\u2019t receive the service they paid for. It doesn\u2019t cost you anything extra and provides added peace of mind should something go wrong.
